Meaning of BoxBerry
The name BoxBerry comes from a plant, the box berry (aka teaberry). As a child, I lived next door to my grandmother who had teaberry plants in her yard. Around age 5, she introduced me to the plant and its minty edible berries so naturally I assumed this was a magical plant that only grew at her home. Many of the first BoxBerry designs were memories of my grandmother’s home. I loved that feeling I got when I went searching for the tea berries so I wanted my card line to represent that same feeling of nostalgia.
As a life-long doodler, I (Erin Bonham) was always creating characters with silly expressions. Like most girls of the 90's I had an obsession for the wildly colorful stationery products of Lisa Frank. One of my fondest memories was sitting at my mother's vintage writing desk that was always stocked with whimsical stationery, stamps, and greeting cards.
In 2012, I started creating cards to send to distant friends and family. One family member mentioned that I should start producing the cards for sale -- so in 2013, I opened an Etsy shop, signed up for local art fairs, and began selling to local Chicago boutiques. At the time I had about 6 six designs and now I have over 70.
